Distance Leaning Supports for English Learners During the COVID-19 Era

In this time of on-line learning, our English Learners need the very same types of supports that they receive when classes are in session at school sites. Our state has outlined and reinforced that:

“English learners must continue to receive designated and integrated English Language Development (ELD) as part of their educational curriculum. Local educational agencies (LEAs) have the flexibility to determine how services will be provided to English learners. The LEA can determine where, when, and what the students receive in order to continue to make progress toward English language proficiency and meet grade level academic achievement.

Although there are no minimum number of minutes required, ELD is a required course of study for English learners.” (April 3, 2020)

We are suggesting:

  • Teacher use the on-line tools you already know how to use, and expand your knowledge and usage from there.

  • Support family reading together and ongoing conversations about what students are doing for all their learning responsibilities

  • Continue to encourage family interactions and fun activities, including singing, playing games, exercising, cooking, and other activities that promote conversations and interactions
